Events

Once again this year, Gilbert Oshinsky LLP participated in the Lawyers Have Heart 10k run. GO had three participants in the race this year. During the last decade, Lawyers Have Heart has raised more than $4.8 million to benefit the American Heart Association, whose mission is building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. By participating in this event, volunteers not only help to strengthen their own hearts through exercise, but also help raise funds vital to the education programs and research of the AHA

Over twenty lawyers, staff and their families from Gilbert Oshinsky LLP participated in The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. In support of one of GO's employees, Deirdre Patterson, the firm comprised a team called "Deirdre's Brigade" and completed this 5K run/walk. Deirdre's family and friends joined the GO team in this wonderful event. The Susan G. Komen Foundation continues to help helps raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

For the second year in a row, Gilbert Oshinsky LLP participated in a Sandwich Making Drive! GO made over 1100 sandwiches to be donated to Martha’s Table, a non profit that feeds over 1000 homeless people in the DC metro area. Martha’s Table’s mission is to serve the needs of the less fortunate in the Washington, DC community through food, learning, healthy living, recreational and family support services.

On February 28, several GO employees and their families headed to the Washington Home, a local nursing home and rehabilitation center. We spent part of our afternoon playing Bingo, serving refreshments and conversing with the senior citizen residents. Lots of laughs and stories were shared, and the revelry was enjoyed by all.

On Tuesday, December 16th some Gilbert Oshinsky employees headed to Rachael's Women's Center to help sort holiday gifts that Rachael's gathered for local women in need. GO employees spent part of the afternoon organizing sweatshirts, jeans, and coats galore!! These clothing items, that the women asked for, will be wrapped and given to the women after a Christmas dinner.

Gilbert Oshinsky LLP has once again participated in The Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program.  GO employees shopped for new clothing and/or toys for 66 children!  Brand new bicycles, fun games, and many other gifts from GO employees will be picked up by the parents from The Salvation Army to deliver to the children on Christmas day.

Gilbert Oshinsky LLP sponsored employees to participate in the Fannie Mae Walk-a-Thon to Benefit the Homeless on November 22, 2008. The Walk-a-Thon benefits many D.C. homeless organizations. The benefits from GO’s participation are directed to Rachael's Women's Center. Rachael’s Women’s Center provides homeless and formerly homeless women with shelter, food, support, case management, and other services with the goal of providing opportunities to develop independence, sense of self and hope.

Throughout the month of November, Gilbert Oshinsky LLP employees donated food to benefit the Rachael's Women's Center. The food donated will help Rachel's Women's Center provide a Thanksgiving dinner for homeless women in the District of Columbia.

Gilbert Oshinsky LLP provided costumes and candy bags for a Halloween Harvest Party for children living at the Valley Place Transitional Shelter. The Valley Place Transitional Shelter provides apartment style housing and many other social services to Washington, D.C. families in need. The Harvest Party is also sponsored by the Virginia Williams Resource Center, which works with Valley Place to find housing for homeless families. GO employees donated 60 new or gently used Halloween costumes and helped make over 80 candy treat bags for the children. Because the children at the shelter are discouraged to Trick-or-Treat in the surrounding areas, the Harvest Party provides the children with a chance to celebrate the holiday and dress up in costumes — an opportunity some of the children have never had.

Gilbert Randolph LLP provided school supplies to 42 high school students  involved in the Perry School Community Service. The Perry School Center  was created in 1991 to address issues of chronic poverty in the North Capitol St. area of Washington, DC. The community raised over $5.6 million to convert the vacant and historic Perry School into the Perry School Community Services Center; provides services in youth development, economic empowerment and social services.

For the Generous Associates campaign, Gilbert Randolph LLP raised $20,450 for the Legal Aid Society - more than any firm in the city twice our size and once again among the leading firms in the city regardless of size.  We had participation from every attorney plus several staff members.  The campaign as a whole raised $763,000.

The annual Generous Associates Campaign of Legal Aid is a fundraising campaign run by associates at Washington, DC law firms city wide. The Generous Associates Campaign allows Legal Aid to continue to provide free legal services to the neediest members of the DC community in the areas of family law, housing, and public benefits.

Both of these organizations provide professional clothing and ongoing career and life skills education to low-income women and men  to increase their employment and job retention potential and to contribute to their economic independence.

Ten Gilbert Randolph LLP  lawyers and staff participated in the Capital Area Food Bank sorting and repackaging project. The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest, public nonprofit hunger and nutrition education resource in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. Each year the CAFB distributes 20 million pounds of food, including 6 million pounds of fresh produce, to over 700 partner agencies.

Gilbert Randolph LLP actively participated in the Angel Tree Christmas Collection drive, an annual event with a long tradition of providing needy children with gifts for Christmas. We had 50 children assigned to us and 35 lawyers and staff participated.

Gilbert Randolph LLP provided school supplies to elementary students participating in the DC Village program, one of the Coalition for the Homeless’s initiatives.  DC village is a shelter that  enables families to stay for up to 90 days, so that they can find permanent housing  or a place in a transitional facility.

Gilbert Randolph LLP underwrote and attended the annual awards luncheon for the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. Gilbert Randolph received an award for its work on, and successful resolution of, a fair housing rights case against an insurer. The case involved claims of red-lining discrimination in the sale of homeowners' insurance products.

Runners from Gilbert Randolph LLP participated in the 16th Annual "Lawyers Have Heart" 10k race to benefit the American Heart Association. Through the event, the Firm raised over $300 to support the American Heart Association in its fight against heart disease and strokes, which take the lives of over 1 million Americans every year.

Gilbert Randolph LLP sponsored 9 walkers in the National Race for the Cure. There were 40,000 participants in the Race and $2.3 million was raised for breast cancer research.

Gilbert Randolph LLP underwrote and attended annual fundraiser/awards dinner for D.C. Appleseed. Gilbert Randolph received an award in recognition of its work on D.C.'s non-resident income tax lawsuit (more commonly known as the "commuter tax" lawsuit).

Gilbert Randolph LLP underwrote and attended the first annual fundraiser for the Homeless Children's Playtime Project, an organization whose members and volunteers go to D.C. Villages, the city's largest homeless shelter, to play and spend time with the children there.

This year's donations from Gilbert Randolph's second annual professional-clothing drive went to Dress for Success, a national organization that provides job-training services to underprivileged/at-risk women in the communities it serves. Through donations of work-appropriate attire from generous professionals, these women are outfitted for job interviews and are sent to their new workplaces with a confidence-boosting professional wardrobe.

Gilbert Randolph was a major corporate sponsor of the used book sale fundraiser for Turning the Page , a Washington, D.C. nonprofit working to improve educational opportunities for District of Columbia Public School students. Gilbert Randolph attorneys and staff also participated in a used book drive for Turning the Page, which garnered over 60,000 volumes for the book sale, which grossed over $50,000 for Turning the Page's programs.

Gilbert Randolph LLP underwrote and attended the 17th annual Servant of Justice awards dinner/fundraiser for the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia. Gilbert Randolph received special recognition for its fundraising leadership in D.C. Legal Aid's 2005 Generous Associates Campaign. The Firm came in first place for funds raised in the mid-size firm category (50 - 100 laweyrs).

Gilbert Randolph LLP released two videos to educate homeowners and small business owners about insurance coverage issues that they may face as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Over 500 copies of the DVDs have been provided free-of-charge to individuals in need and organziations working to assist those impacted by Katrina.

A good time was had by all who comprised Team Gilbert Randolph LLP in the D.C. Light The Night Walk on Thursday, October 6! The Firm's generous support, in addition to individual team members' fundraising efforts, garnered over $2,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Many team members' lives have been touched by blood cancers and the Society helps fund vital research and patient services.

On Sunday, September 18th, Gilbert Randolph LLP hosted a fun-filled Carnival Day for the kids and families of the DC Village homeless shelter located in Southwest. The air was filled with music, laughter and the aroma of hotdogs on the grill. Among the many fun-filled attractions were the Wild Wave Water Slide, Treasure of the Caribbean Obstacle Course, Four Way Shoot Out, Wave of Fire and Rock Mountain! While DJ Deno was spinning the tunes, we served up plenty of food, drinks and fun. The grounds outside the shelter were transformed from a bleak and empty yard to something rivaling a Ringling Bros. circus. Many thanks to all the folks at Gilbert Randolph who participated and made this such a special day for the kids.

Gilbert Randolph LLP established a $10,000 scholarship to fund the education of women attending school at night while holding down jobs and participating in the community. The scholarship was created in honor of a hardworking Gilbert Randolph employee, who recently graduated from college after seven years of putting herself through school at night while raising her sons and volunteering her time.

On Sunday, July 31st Gilbert Randolph LLP volunteers participated in the Homeless Children's Playtime Project by taking time to play and interact with some of the more than 182 homeless children in Washington, D.C. To kick off the event, Gilbert Randolph organized the arrival of a fully stocked Good Humor truck filled with an assortment of complimentary ice cream treats.

Once again, Gilbert Randolph LLP has successfully completed another bag lunch community service project for S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat). S.O.M.E. is a private, non-profit organization that exists to help the poor and homeless of the nation's capital. This year, Gilbert Randolph's team of 27 volunteers assembled a record-breaking 500 lunches in 47 minutes.

Suited for Change provides professional clothing and ongoing career education to low-income women who have completed job training and/or job readiness programs and are seeking employment. Bread for the City is a private, non-profit organization that provides vulnerable residents of Washington, D.C., with comprehensive services including food, clothing, medical care and legal and social services in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.

In Gilbert Randolph's continuing support of Rachael's Women's Center, the Firm organized a toy drive and ornament sale for the holidays. Both the toy drive, which filled a large vehicle with a variety of toys and clothing, and ornament sale, which raised $600 dollars, were a huge success. Rachael's Women's Center first opened its doors in 1979 and is one of a very small number of daytime shelters for women in the District area.

The clinic provides or facilitates the delivery of high quality, comprehensive, accessible health care and community services.

Appleseed Center for Law and Justice works on issues affecting the lives of those who live and work in the District of Columbia -- from health care to voting representation to education reform to environmental concerns to jobs and housing.

At this event, Gilbert Randolph received the NAPALC Distinguished Service Award.
