Washington, D.C. – Rachel Kronowitz, a founding partner and Vice Chair of the Gilbert LLP law firm, is the new board chair of Washington Area Women’s Foundation, a public foundation which focuses on improving the lives of women and girls in the Washington metropolitan area. An active and long-time member of the Board of The Women’s Foundation, Kronowitz was unanimously elected to the position by an 18-member board at their most recent meeting earlier this month—her term officially begins in July.
In her new role, Kronowitz’s chief responsibilities will be to serve as one of Washington Area Women’s Foundation’s spokespersons and ambassadors, support and advise the president of The Women’s Foundation, guide and ensure the implementation of The Foundation’s mission and purpose, and provide personal philanthropic leadership.
“Rachel’s dedication to our mission, demonstrated ability to understand the importance of The Women’s Foundation’s work, and her relationships in the community made her an easy choice for board chair,” said Deborah Gandy, Kronowitz’s predecessor on the board.
Kronowitz, who previously has held leadership roles on both Washington Area Women’s Foundation’s executive and development committees, credits her active involvement with the organization and other non-profits in part to Gilbert LLP’s commitment to giving back to the community.
“It’s a great honor to serve as board chair of such an outstanding organization and to work alongside our terrific new president who is a tremendous asset,” said Kronowitz. “Even in the face of a recovering economy that has impacted donor giving, Washington Area Women’s Foundation remains firmly committed to its mission of philanthropy to support women and that’s an objective that the other partners of Gilbert LLP join me in supporting.”
Kronowitz previously played a key role as part of the planning committee for Washington Area Women’s Foundation Leadership Luncheon, its largest fundraising event which last year attracted 1,200 attendees and an impressive cadre of speakers. She also has been an active member of The Women’s Foundation Washington 100, a leadership network of both women and men who have committed to donating at least $10,000 to the organization over a two-year period.
Later this year, Kronowitz along with Nicola Goren, the Foundation’s new president, will unveil an updated version of the 2003 report “A Portrait of Women and Girls in the Washington Metropolitan Area.” The 2010 Portrait Project will provide an in-depth look at the lives of women and girls in key areas including: economic security; education; health and well-being; violence and safety; and leadership and giving back. The research and information gathered for the Portrait Project will be the basis of The Women’s Foundation’s future grantmaking.
