William Copley has broad experience representing clients in complex commercial litigation.  He has represented clients at every stage of litigation – from pre-suit investigation and negotiations, through discovery and trial, and in appeals.  At the trial level, Bill has represented clients in cases pending before state and federal courts throughout the country, including representing clients in trials before the United States District Courts for the District of Connecticut and the Western District of Texas, the Circuit Court for Fairfax County, Virginia, and the Superior Court for the District of Columbia.  At the appellate level, Bill has authored more than 25 appellate briefs to various state and federal appellate courts, including the United States Supreme Court, and he has represented clients in oral arguments before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Third and Fourth Circuits.  Outside of court, he has counseled clients in matters raising novel or complex insurance issues, including advising a client regarding the establishment of a multi-billion dollar health insurance program that is the largest of its kind in the United States.

Currently, Bill is representing clients in a variety of commercial litigation disputes, including:

  • Representing an asbestos trust that is adverse to more than 50 insurance companies in a state court case raising numerous insurance coverage issues.

  • Representing a Fortune 100 bank in a dispute with a title insurance company regarding a massive, multi-party fraud that involved the generation and sale of fraudulent mortgages.

  • Representing a class of more than 20,000 individuals in an appeal pending before the State of New York’s appellate courts that will establish, under New York law, important principles of insurance law in the mass tort context.
